What is fiber cement siding?
Fiber cement (sometimes called cement board siding) is an extremely durable composite material made of cement reinforced with cellulose fibers. It’s most typically sold in the Indianapolis area as variations of fiber cement lap siding which are fiber cement panels that can be turned into a board and batten look and fiber cement shake siding. The most common finishes for fiber cement siding is smooth or wood grained. The alternative option is vinyl siding or insulated vinyl siding.
Fiber cement siding cost
There are many things to take into consideration when Gemini is giving you a fiber cement siding estimate. How big is your home? How high are we installing? Which fiber cement siding product are your choosing? All of these factors contribute to your fiber cement siding estimate. James Hardie averages that nationally Hardieplank fiber cement, which is their product, costs about $10 per square foot. While it’s at the high end of your house siding choices, fiber cement board is very durable and likely the last house siding product you will have installed.
Most common types of fiber cement siding in Indianapolis
-
Fiber cement lap siding
Fiber cement lap siding comes in several widths that provide a different finished exposure profile in Indianapolis. In the Indianapolis area the finished exposure profile for fiber cement lap siding ranges from 5” to 8”, with 8” being the most common. The fiber cement cost is more expensive for the smaller profiles as it requires more material and labor to install. James Hardie manufactures a well know brand of fiber cement lap siding called Hardieplank lap siding.
-
Fiber cement shake siding or fiber cement shingle siding
While fiber cement shake siding is more commonly thought of in Cape Cod style homes, we have been installing more fiber cement shingles over the last couple of years in the Indianapolis area. These panels are designed to look like real wood shakes, will last a very long time and typically come in either a staggered edge pattern where the bottoms of the panels are not in a straight line or a straight edge pattern.
- Board and batten fiber cement
This is great house siding choice when considering fiber cement. The “boards” in the term board and batten are 4’ wide panels of fiber cement that are installed vertically. The “battens” in the term board and batten is then the vertical trim that is installed to cover the seams of the board becoming a board and batten finish. The battens are placed in intervals of 1’ to 2’ apart.
